A Magic Box

Folding Trees has a link to a tutorial for this awesome box that I knew immediately I had to make. I didn't know what I would use it for. I didn't care. I just knew that before I did anything else I needed to make that magical box.

Making it filled me with glee. The finished product - wholly satisfying. PLUS it turns out to be quite the handy tool for storing our growing cornstarch bead collection. (See previous post.)

Summer Crafting

The summer holidays are upon us once again and for my daughter and I that means lots and lots of crafting. It's wonderful to see her artistic skills develop as she gets older. Her increased dexterity also means we can tackle more complicated crafts which is nice for me too!

Today we made beads out of cornstarch modeling clay. This is BY FAR the best home made clay I've ever made. The texture is unbelievably smooth and it dries white - with far fewer cracks than salt dough - which provides the perfect backdrop for painting.

We still need to seal them but here are some photos of the process so far...

Check out the beautiful rose my little girl made!....Interested in making some cornstarch modeling clay of your very own? I got the recipe here. Have fun!

Etsy Purchase

Almost nine years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter I couldn't wear my wedding ring for the last couple of months of her gestation because of swelling and weight gain. It bothered me that I couldn't wear my rings because I wanted people to know that there was a husband/daddy involved in the impending birth of my child. This time around, I am prepared. I browsed through the wonderful jewelry makers at etsy and bought the fabulous ring you see pictured above from Firefallstudios. I can wear on my wedding finger while I'm pregnant and then switch it to my other hand once I'm back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm thinking that will take a good couple of weeks for sure. ;D

Believe me when I say the photo does not do this piece justice. I received it yesterday and was blown away by the quality and the weight of it. Fantastic shop and great service too. Thank you George and Jean!

Long Overdue Update

Assuming that there are still people out there interested in my posts here, I thought I would fill you in on the bun in my oven and the preparations we've been making.

Ultrasound tells us that it is a boy and after MUCH deliberation and ultimately - what I think was - some spiritual intervention, his name is Rowan.

I've started packing/cleaning/purging/sorting the rooms that need to be amalgamated in order to move our guest room to our main floor den so that our current guest room can become the nursery. I knew it would be a big job, but I wasn't prepared for just HOW big. How is it that we accumulate so much stuff over the years?? I'm more than happy to get rid of boxes and bags full of junk and unused items and have vowed to stop keeping things in the house that I don't use. Don't get me wrong - I'm far from being a hoarder, but when space and storage suddenly become more of an issue then it's time to be more conscious of the clutter that can slowly begin to take over one's house.

We've ordered the baby bedding and I've even done some little framed watercolour paintings to match the sailboat theme.

In case I forgot to mention, Rowan is due to be born on October 4th. We're going for a 3D/4D ultrasound in a few weeks and if I can figure out how to put the video on my blog then you will all get to see him in utero! I can't wait!

Take care everyone. I hope you are all well and I thank you for visiting!

Happy Earth Day To You!

I wonder how many blog posts will be titled the same today?

It has been quite some time since I've flexed my craft muscle. I must have sensed it was about to atrophy for yesterday I was overcome with the urge to roll up some magazine pages to make a bunch of reeds and cover a wooden mirror frame that has been sitting in my basement for ages. I used this tutorial as a guide.

It just so happens that this is a "green" craft which felt great to do today on Earth day. It is such a simple craft that anyone can do and although it is time consuming rolling up all those reeds, it's the kind of mindless activity that you can do while watching your favorite tv shows or listening to music. You can even recruit visitors to make some so that you're not all sitting around the table with idle hands.

I now find myself prowling the house looking for other things to cover!

Are you doing anything special this Earth day?
